Haven't read that book, but the language is quite nice if you like pattern-matching and a strongly typed functional language which can infer its own types (without having to declare them explicitly). It makes compiler/interpreter writing much easier than it would be usually.

Why would you need to learn french? I don't know any french, but I had no trouble reading their documentation, most is in english or has been translated to english.
