hi /prog/
I've never programmed before in my life but I'd like to start. Reommend me a language. Is C++ a good language to start?

Scheme is a good language to start, taught in introductory courses.

On the topic of esoteric programming languages, Funge isn't too bad in terms of a good place to start. So fundamentally different to a normal programming language that experience in them doesn't help much.

hi /prog/
I've never had sex before in my life but I'd like to start. Reommend me a way. Is gang rape a good way to start?

Maybe you should have learned some BBCode in there too.

For me it was:

BASIC -> C -> C++ -> Java -> Ruby -> Lisp -> Satori -> Python -> Haskell -> Fjölnir -> "GRUNNUR"

And x86 Assembly between C and C++.

Name: Anonymous 2009-04-09 6:29

BASIC → z80 → C++ → x86 → Java → C → Objective-C → Perl → PHP → JavaScript → ppc → Lua → /prog/ → BBCode → Haskell → ABC → Lisp

Name: Anonymous 2009-04-09 6:43

Oh, and throw HyperTalk/AppleScript/PIC/sh in there wherever.  Probably forgetting a few, but it hardly matters at this point.

And PHP between Java and Ruby. And Objective-C between Ruby and Lisp.

Name: Anonymous 2009-04-09 9:16

For me it went something like this:

English → BASIC → VBA¹ → Latin → French → VB6¹ → C with Classes → German → Shitty BASIC-like language on my graphic calculator → Sepples¹ → C-INTERCAL → Befunge-93 → TriINTERCAL → Brainfuck → Malbolge → Chef → Ook! → x86 → Sepples Abuse → Perl → Adv. Sepples Abuse → bash → JavaScript¹ → PHP¹ → VB.NET → C♯ → Hungarian → Ruby → XSLT¹ → JavaScript (properly) → Nemerle → IRP → /prog/ → BBCode → Befunge-98 → Piet → Scheme → Haskell → F♯ → LATEX → Haskell → The ABC Programming Language → FIOC → EmotionML → Befunge-108 → Paintfuck → X♯ → Fjölnir → Íslenksu → /"GRUNNUR"/

Haven't done a great deal of programming in some of these, though. I've got a lot of languages on my to-do list, but I'm too lazy to even look at most of them.
¹Scarred for life.

my university comp-sci classes didn't prepare me for using Fjölnir in the real world.  now i can't land a single programming job =(

You're best bet is to start out with LOGO. It's actually all you really need.
