I don't consider myself a programmer, but I have pirated a copy of Visual Studio 2008 and taught myself C#(i know, lol, etc...)by writting a nifty little program to catalog all my doujins by title, author, circle, tags, and notes in an indexed file. I used SQLite libraries through a C# interface I found on Sourceforge, and was able to(with the help of a 7zip port) pull out the covers from the archives and display them next to the info pulled from the database when I searched for something in particular. I was pretty proud of myself, because that was the first thing aside from a "hello world!" app I've ever written. I learned a proverbial ass-ton of stuff I never thought I would ever understand. The feeling you get when you learn a new skill, especially a useful one, is amazing. It's like a mini-orgasm.
Now, I'm looking to figure out how to program in assembly. Not professionally though, I'm just trying to see how it's done and just to understand it. I want to get closer to the metal, dealing directly with data registers, popping and pushing stuff on the stack, etc.
I've held myself back on looking for tutorials on assembly in fear of learning the wrong way. It's harder for me to unlearn wrong way than to learn the right way. The only resource I've read was the wikipedia articles on assembly, process registers, structures, etc. I figured, despite the common consensus, there are plenty of intelligent programmers on 4chan, and one of them could put me on the right path(tutorial wise).
What should I know, what should I stay away from, what should I use, what not to use...These are the answers I'm trying for. I'm trying for a "Hello World" in assembly I suppose.
