Java is taking over

Name: Anonymous 2009-03-16 15:41

Sun is becoming our new overlord.  Ever since Sun took 90% of the suck out of C++, Java has been everywhere and its growing.
It's used for 3D and 2D commercial games:

http://altitudegame.com/

It's used for web applications; flash is too limiting:
http://runescape.com/
http://www.partypoker.com/anywhere/

Even the demoscene, traditionally the realm of hardcore asm/c++ programmers is embracing it:

http://www.pouet.net/prod.php?which=50149

Businesses love it, it makes software cheap to maintain.

Java overwhelmingly tops the chart of the most used programming languages: http://www.tiobe.com/index.php/content/paperinfo/tpci/index.html
More people code in Java than C++, C# and python put together!

It's also used for web servers:
http://java.sun.com/javaee/5/docs/tutorial/doc/bnafd.html

It's extensively used on embedded devices:
http://java.sun.com/javame/index.jsp

Love it or hate it, Java is the future.  People used to say you should use the right tool for the job when it comes to programming languages.  These days Java is becoming the duct tape of tools, it runs everywhere and does everything but low level OS work.  It can solve nearly any software problem.

The Next 50 Programming Languages

The following list of languages denotes #51 to #100. Since the differences are relatively small, the programming languages are only listed (in alphabetical order).

* ABC, AD, Algol, Alpha, APL, ...

Java is the past, present, and future.  Respect your programming overlord or be left in the dust.

That URL states

"The ratings are based on the number of skilled engineers world-wide, courses and third party vendors."

"the TIOBE index is not about...the language in which most lines of code have been written."

So I don't think you can say it's the most used or that more people code in it.
