``Proper quotes''

Name: Anonymous 2009-03-16 1:14

Okay guys, what's the story behind the ``proper quotes''  One of my computer science professors uses them, so they must be something beyond the scope of /prog/.

inside-out quotes are inside-out.

Name: Anonymous 2009-03-16 2:07

It's just a style. I don't care if someone uses: ``This is a quote" or "This is a quote". It makes no difference to me and I don't understand why this is even being discussed.

`` does not constitute punctuation, "style" or not. ` is not an apostrophe. `` is not a quotation mark.

` has no purpose in English on its own. Actually, it's meant to be grave or acute (I forget which is which) that goes over a letter, such as in è. It is a terrible! crime to attempt to bastardize the wonderful device of quotation marks with this EXPERT HEATHEN.

My Dutch-language elementary school textbooks used them, before Flemish nationalism made them unpopular. They're the default quotes in many French locales, though modern keyboard layouts don't tend to have dedicated keys for them anymore.

I think I did it again.
I made you believe
We're more than just quotes.
Oh, baby;
It might seem like a char,
But it doesn't mean
That I'm serious.
'Cause to lose all my characters...
That is just so typically me.
Oh, baby; baby.

Oops!
... I did it again.
I played with Unicode.
Got lost in the spec.
Oh, baby; baby.
Oops!
... You think I'm in BMP.
That I'm sent from above...
I'm not that intelligent.

You see my problem is this:
I'm dreaming away;
Wishing that quotes, they truly exist.
I cry watching the days.
Can't you see I'm a fool
In so many ways?
But to lose all my chars...
That is just so typically me.
Baby, oh...
