What exactly are 'crackers'

Name: Anonymous 2009-03-11 15:22

You've seen the movies.
The 13 year old nerds who hack into banks, websites, etc, but can an early teen really do so much? Not only that, but how do they know how? Its not exactly rocket science, but its not posted on the net.

I know what they do, but how?
It really facinated me, and I simply want to know more about them

(not asking for a fucking guide here, but im sure you guys get the idea)

A cracker is a type of biscuit that developed from military hardtack and nautical ship biscuits.

crackers are specifically people who create warez(pirated software) by cracking copy protection or DRM.
hackers hack into computer systems,or any type of software without the motive of distribution of its contents.
Script kiddies (the 13 year olds) download ready made exploits from internet and try to hack with them(without much understanding of their function:like something from movies).
If they learn the functionality, they move toward becoming hackers.
Hackers can program their own tools and exploits which they use to “leverage their core skillsets” vs exploited software.
Its not uncommon for hackers to use others tools,or code: hackers don't care about “copyright” or “patents”.

My personal opinion on this subject is that all media portraying teenage hackers are horribly outdated. Sure, hacking into something in 1980 probably was pretty easy, so even kids with some weeks of computer experience and the necessary malice and criminal intent could do it.

Nowadays, most systems are heavily protected by firewalls, IDS, enhanced kernel functionality etc. so that in most cases, years of practice and extensive knowledge are required. Oh, and thanks to all that research that went into security for the last years, it will also be pretty easy to catch up to you if you ever manage to get into something.

Bullshit. Its the minority of corporate networks who spend their money of security,
however plenty of websites are using vulnerable, outdated and easily exploitable software.

'Not only that, but how do they know how? Its not exactly rocket science, but its not posted on the net.'

Rocket science isnt actually as hard as once said, so ignore that part

Name: Anonymous 2009-03-11 16:18

but its not posted on the net.
look harder it's not that difficult to find

Name: FrozenVoid 2009-03-11 16:19

and searching Internet for exploits isn't as hard as once said, either

What about pacifico?

Name: FrozenVoid 2009-03-11 16:59

is pacifico the guy who hijacked 4chan DNS for several days?
I recall 4chan once redirected to some other forum.

0/10. You won't find anyone here disagreeing about those definitions of hacker and cracker.

Name: Anonymous 2009-03-12 4:01

Communities such as Hackthissite and Hellboundhackers are full of hackers and script kiddies.

teen agers don't know how to hack banks.

Unless they have programs which immerse them in a 3D world through which they must navigate in order to hack stuff, like on "Hackers"

"If at first you don't succeed, your probably a programmer" ~unknown
This was the point in that thread that I started feeling sick to my stomach since it reminded me of so many bad programmers I've seen.

I can not reproduce.  That is why I became a programmer.

Name: Anonymous 2009-03-12 22:34

>>30
If you are unable to reproduce things in a software development environment you won't get far there either.

Name: Anonymous 2009-03-12 22:36

>>31
Updated status from OPEN to WONTFIX.

Unable to reproduce.

Name: Anonymous 2009-03-12 22:48

>>32
That is not the purpose of WONTFIX. WONTFIX is for verified bugs that simply have no chance of ever being fixed.

Name: Anonymous 2009-03-13 5:03

>>33
You are a faggot. Leaving status at WONTFIX.

Name: Anonymous 2009-03-13 9:48

>>33
Just because I am unable to reproduce it, does not mean the bug is not verified. It might be, say, hardware dependent.

Name: Anonymous 2009-03-13 10:56

Updated status from NEW to UNCONFIRMED.
Updated resolution from WONTFIX to NONE.
Changed product to Your Fixed.

When will this be fixed?  My children are starving, work faster faggots!!

I reported this bug to upstream but those ignorants didn't even respond. Didn't really expect anything else though. When you want something done you'll have to do it yourself.

Please fix ASAP.
