you rarely really need to use the command line in linux. most of the time there are graphical tools that can get the job done just fine. on windows, there are graphical tools to do basic things, but for a lot of things you have to use the command line because there's just no other way to do it on windows.

Yes, I use Gentoo. So? I dont see any problem. I embraced my Gentoo distro long ago and I am happy together with my workstation (that is a stage 1 box!). I have a fucking lot of ebuilds in and outside of portage and my CFLAGS are pretty optimized and solid.

no, not really.  at all.  especially for wireless cards.  I've tried linux on 5 diffrent laptops, some diffrent brands, and not one worked 'out of the box'.  On one particular one, I tried looking for drivers for the wireless card but all I found was, basicly

Eventually I did come across a small source forge page with code for the exact card I have.  The project was something like v0.1 and hasn't been updated since 2005.  I tried to download and compile but the author fucked up the make file and made references to his own home folder and other shit.  Since I don't waste my time with C++ and programming, I couldn't get the driver at all.

I tried the windows wireless thing too, I downloaded the extracter from the manufacturer's website, used wine to extract, and tried to find what exactly to add into it.  It looks for .inf files, so I add the .inf files, one by freaking one, until it tells me I have the right one(why can't it automatically do that?).  It still didn't work in the end.
