Most people admit that sicp might not be the best way to introduce programming to first year students. Quite frankly it's a bit hard. But old school computer scientists that were taught using sicp wouldn't have it any other way. They feel sicp was hard enough to weed out the programmers that weren't going to be successful anyway.
HTDP tries to introduce cs in a more accessible way.
But sicp is still a great text, and a must for serious cs students.
