High Definition editing specs for CP

I need to edit on Sonyvegaspro8 my new camera
Canon vixia hg20 (its HD obviously)
It runs on sonyvegaspro8 and it was made to, it has AVCHD format
my computer is a windows xp, 2002 service pack 3
i have 1GB of ram, 2.99 GHz and had 70 GB of HD space, only have 40 now.
My footage runs on sonyveagspro8 but its choppy and laggy (need to support it better)
WHAT SPECS TO I NEED TO RUN IT SMOOTHLY?!?!!?!?!
