So, does anyone here use Ruby for anything than programs that say "Hello world." or "CHUNKY BACON!!" ???

Also, anything other than Rails. I only learned Ruby so I could do Rails, but I feel like I'm missing out on something awesome by not playing with Ruby on its own more.

I learned Ruby before Rails came out, never learned Rails, and can confirm that you aren't missing out anything. It's slow as fuck and the `Ruby community' is made of Textmate and hipster and fail.

Well that's fuckin' shitty. See, the problem is that I really, really like Ruby, but I don't want to code for the web forever.

Oh well, it'll at least be a couple years before I really have this to worry about.

Also, sir, Rails is quite awesome and as fast and intuitive as Ruby itself. Rails development is blindingly fast.

That is some heavy shit. I know nothing of Rails or the post ~2004 Ruby community, but if this guy is telling the truth, Rails is indeed quite a feat.

Notice how it took me a few seconds to reply. This one single statement basically means that we all got duped. The main Rails application that DHH created required restarting _400 times/day. That’s a production application that can’t stay up for more than 4 minutes on average.
