[FREELANCING] Odd jobs [SELLOUT]

Name: Anonymous 2009-01-23 19:11

I've been thinking about making some extra money by doing some casual freelance EXPERT PROGRAMMING. I've browsed rentacoder a bit, and many of the `Small Business Projects' seem pretty reasonable (read: trivial) for the $100+ they are willing to pay you. So my questions are:

- Have you used rentacoder?
- Does it actually work?
- Are there any other similar sites I should know about?

1. Yes
2. Yes
3. Rentacoder is pretty much the best one, in my opinion. I've heard of www.guru.com, but I've never used it, so I can't really compare.

Why do you troll yourself so?

FrozenVoid has won when you're seeing him where he is not.

I never said he was there, but you can't deny that the job described there is his tradecraft.

Fuck this crap. It seems that RentACode should rent a coder to fix their shitty site first. >>3 is right, though. If FV replaced the piece of lol-latin and that retarded looking anorectic 80s pseudobatman in his signature with some good old-fashioned SPAM, he would be soon be rich.

I find this post entertaining:
"lol-latin" as if latin is inherently funny or that the quote is faux-latin
"anorectic" the anime style is using different proportions then real-world
"80's" Phantasy Star IV was released in December 17, 1993
"pseudobatman" Wearing a cape isn't exclusive to Batman
"rich" by getting measly dollars for promoting some unrelated crap? You clearly have some warped definition of "rich":
"Project Type:        Very Small Business Project: under $100(USD)"
This is ridiculous to suggest i have any commercial interest in this.

Rentacoder works, but the 15% fee is pretty high.

There are 3 kinds of project requests:
1. Myspace clone for $100.
2. e-Commerce site for $100.
3. Real work requests for a reasonable price.

There are 3 kinds of coders:
1. Indians. They just stean open source shit and repurpose as their own. If you make a request that an open source product does not have, it will be nearly impossible for them to implement.
2. Well inentioned idiots who get over their heads.
3. Real coders.

To win bids you need:
1. A kick ass portfolio site.
2. A high rating.
3. Both.

To get a high rating for nothing, prepare to spend a couple weeks taking on small legit projects for next to nothing, do them correctly. Don't be surprised to do a small page or app that takes 8 hours and you only get $50 at first. Once you get a high rating, you can expect to demand $20-$60 an hour for projects and win. In some areas that might no seem like a lot, but doing shit at home means you spend less timeand money on the commute to go to some office etc. Also, if you do your taxes right you get to keep more of that money than you would working for someone else.

Also, if you don't do your taxes you get to keep all of that money instead of giving it to the man.

In another vein, how about TopCoder?  Could you earn any kind of steady income on that?
Looks like you'd be up against less Indian BSc's and more Russian basement coder ass-pies.

I freelanced for about four months at scriptlance.com, and made around 2k euros doing small jobs from time to time. At first you'll need to literally whore yourself to get a few good reviews before you can bid a reasonable amount of money and get chosen. If you have free time, it's worth a try.
