Greetings /prog/

Last time I did something that you could call programming something was in vocational school a few years back with simple sepples.
Now I'm visiting a Perl course from work (thought it coult help since I work with some Linux systems) but I really don't get shit. On the second day today we spent the whole time on regexes, subroutines and reference shit. I already struggled in confusion with basic syntax, loops, hashs and that crap yesterday, but today it really was unpleasant rape.
Is perl just that hard of a language to learn or am I too retarded to understand basic programming logic?

I obviously haven't read my share of SICP, sorry about that. But it's already too late for that now, and even if I tried, it's just too high for me.

You're a retard, sorry.

Name: Anonymous 2009-01-21 14:13

Give it more time, and dedicate some of your own time to learning. You'll pick it up eventualy.

Name: Anonymous 2009-01-21 14:19

Learn Python instead.

If you have a hard time with loops and data types you're probably not cut out to be a programmer.

Sometimes people have mental blocks that dissolve with time and seem silly later. It sounds like the class is moving very fast and it's not surprising if you didn't get all that down in one session. Even if it's something you can easily learn, it's a lot to internalize in a couple of hours. Look up some tutorials on the net and study the basics some more.

I learned perl from (began to learn, and fell in love with) waha's imageboard software. I didn't understand a fuck (except for parts that looked like C) in the beginning, but the whole thing looked so magical to me that I kept trying (funky syntax highlighting from programmer's notepad helped a lot). I even had problems with this: http://perldoc.perl.org/perllol.html, yet now I can't even imagine what can someone not understand about this.

Anyway, no, perl is not that hard of a language to learn. Keep trying, or listen >>2-kun and get out of this nice board.

perl is way easier than sepples

Name: Anonymous 2009-01-21 21:18

I don't know about you, but perl is too complicated. What's the deal with $ @ % etc etc... Completely unnecessary and probably the biggest stumbling block for newcomers. I'll take C++ and Python over Perl any day.

perl is an ancient pile of shit.  Use python instead.

When I started learning Perl I wasn't the best programmer and I found it very difficult. However, the complex behaviors of Perl syntax in different contexts helped my understanding of programming languages greatly. The main hurdle is remembering all the unique functionality and (pointlessly) cryptic syntax. Perl is great for getting shit done, though. Also, when Perl 6 comes out all you fools are going to feel like idiots for saying it's outmoded. Remember, Perl is the glue holding the internet together.

Ruby and Python both have much more line-noise-free ways of doing that.

What really needs to happen is someone needs to get his personal information and give it out on /prog/. Its worked for obnoxious tripfags on /g/ before.
