The douchy defends always say shit like, but Facebook uses it. Yes it does, but the Facebook platform does not run on PHP. It ONLY is used for echoing output to the pages. It is also so terrible, their devs have had to spend time fixing bugs and adding shit that should already be there instead of doing their real fucking job which is making Facebook suck more.

Ease of deployment and the fact that art-school web designers can write three-line scripts in it and feel good about themselves.
The language itself is pig disgusting, but that doesn't have any bearing on it popularity. Even ColdFusion was popular for a while, after all.
