OGRE and other open sores 3D graphics engines

Name: Anonymous 2008-12-11 13:27

Why do they suck?

Name: Anonymous 2008-12-11 13:29

Probably because no one uses it.

Name: Anonymous 2008-12-11 13:45

Can they be salvaged?
I don't want to reinvent the wheel here

5/10. Concise flamebait.

But OGRE -is- a piece of shite.
See XNA (XNA's Not Acronymed) to see what a real game engine is supposed to be like.

What's wrong with OGRE?

Name: Anonymous 2008-12-11 20:51

3D graphics and game engines have been one of the most popular things that almost every aspiring programmer wanted to make for years now

so why is it that after all these years nobody has done it right

BUILD is cool but I don't think that counts
For the spiritual successor to BUILD may I suggest the Cube/Sauerbraten engines

Why don't Build and Voxlap count? Good choice on Cuberbraten though.

I forgot to consider the formerly commercial engines which have had their source code GPL'd years after they stop being commercially viable
id's Quake engines come to mind.

>years after they stop being commercially viable
Well, this might be shocking to you, but there's still Quake1 source code in the Source engine. Also, the engine Infinity Ward is still using in games such as CoD4 still reeks of Quake3 all over the place.

Name: Anonymous 2008-12-12 3:25

Yeah I know
That can hardly be called Quake anymore after all they've done to it.

7/10. Ambiguous. Flamebait. Concise.

Name: Anonymous 2008-12-12 23:06

open source software developers have no deadline or anything that force them to code.
ogre is good for learning that is all.
if you want to base your engine on an open source project quake 3 can be nice but it is outdated ...

Don't change these.
