Name: Anonymous 2008-11-17 2:16

I want to start learning VB, but i cant find beginner step-by-step tutorials.. and that is the only effective way of me learning coding. Any ideas?

Learn a real language...even Java is better than VB

Wtf is wrong with VB?

Everything. By which I mean literally everything. It's not Sepples bad though.

Try perl/python/ruby as your first language
They all have nice tutorials

VB.NET isnt that bad. Its almost the same as c# now, just with different syntax. A lot of universities are teaching .NET now and a lot of companies are using it. Get VS 2008, learn VB, then move to visual c#, then visual c++

One word: AndAlso.

A lot of universities are teaching .NET now
Why would they do that? When I was taught VB back in high school, everyone just spent all their time making shit GUIs with buttons that took up the whole screen and never spent more time on the code than was necessary. Invariably, out of a class of 20, at least 15 couldn't debug their own code.

I still see the problem on my Electrical Engineering course, a bunch of people who learned to program in VB and to this day refuse to do any real design work on their programs (not even a flowchart or pseudocode) because they were used to diving right in and fixing their shit later.

If you want to teach them programming with GUIs why not start them of on python with tkinter? It just as easy and they learn to get their algorithms working before the fucking GUI.

because many software dev companies are moving to the .NET framework

This, pretty much.

Nowadays in enterprises, it's either .NET or Java if it does applications and Sepples if it creates vidya gaems.

Disregarding legacy applications that need to be maintained still... fucking COBOL.

>Invariably, out of a class of 20, at least 15 couldn't debug their own code.

Your teacher failed. The language is fine.

But then again, VB6 and VB.Net are not the same language. They have the same syntax. The fact that you can't make that distinction points to just how fucking awful you are.

>I still see the problem on my Electrical Engineering course, a bunch of people who learned to program in VB...

Awful teachers are not VBs fault.

>If you want to teach them programming with GUIs why not start them of on python with tkinter?

Because it makes more sense to teach people a useful language.

>It just as easy and they learn to get their algorithms working before the fucking GUI.

Again, fault of the teacher not any of the languages inherent abilities. You are confusing IDE, library and language.

You don't seem to be able to make the distinction between many basic computer concepts. You are too stupid to form an opinion.

This should be of no significance to universities.

(your-teacher failed) (the-language is-fine)

(but-then-again (not (are (and vb6 vb.net)) the-same-language)) (they have-the-same-syntax)  (the-fact-that (points-to you-can't-make-that-distinction just-how-fucking-awful-you-are))

(again (fault-of the-teacher) (not (any-of the-languages inherent-abilities))) (you-are (confusing (and ide library language)))

Wat. You think VB is useful compared to Python? I wouldn't touch Python with a dirty stick, but it's pretty widely used.

Invariably, in any programming class I've ever taken, 15 out of 20 are fucktards to begin with, and don't understand basic logic or math.
