Wise quote of the day

Stupid mistakes in code are like typos: even if you think you have handled the language for tens of years, you still end up making spelling mistakes and occasionally forget a word.

Name: Anonymous 2008-09-12 1:51

He who knows the language, knows. Not wise at all.

Einstein argued that there must be simplified explanations of nature, because
God is not capricious or arbitrary.  No such faith comforts the software
engineer.

I have run all but dry of understanding for programmers that willfully pick anything else than OS X as their platform of choice. I know a few that are still stuck in the rut for various reasons -- none of them desire.
Apple will continue to trounce everyone else for the preferred geek platform. The stigma of not being able to use Textmate will increase (watch the Rails screencasts).

Unlike (unfortunately) most people, /prog/grammaers seem to make less mistakes with English.

Now that I think about it, it seems like the rest of 4chan is the same --- I tend to notice typos and grammatical errors really easily, but haven't seen much on this and the other boards, and the few that I have seen were almost always intentional. On the rare occasions that I read regular forums, it's almost painful how all the typos break up the text and make it difficult to follow.

Programming today is a race between software engineers striving to build bigger and better idiot-proof programs, and the Universe trying to produce bigger and better idiots. So far, the Universe is winning.

Computational processes are abstract beings that inhabit computers. As they evolve, processes manipulate other abstract things called data. The evolution of a process is directed by a pattern of rules called a program. People create programs to direct processes. In effect, we conjure the spirits of the computer with our spells.

There is a theory which states that if ever anyone discovers exactly what
the Universe is for and why it is  here. it  will instantly disappear and

There is another theory which states that this has already happened.

The Magician of the Ivory Tower brought his latest invention for the
master programmer to examine.  The magician wheeled a large black box into the
master's office while the master waited in silence.
"This is an integrated, distributed, general-purpose workstation,"
began the magician, "ergonomically designed with a proprietary operating
system, sixth generation languages, and multiple state of the art user
interfaces.  It took my assistants several hundred man years to construct.
Is it not amazing?"
The master raised his eyebrows slightly. "It is indeed amazing," he
said.
"Corporate Headquarters has commanded," continued the magician, "that
everyone use this workstation as a platform for new programs.  Do you agree
to this?"
"Certainly," replied the master, "I will have it transported to the
data center immediately!"  And the magician returned to his tower, well
pleased.
Several days later, a novice wandered into the office of the master
programmer and said, "I cannot find the listing for my new program.  Do
you know where it might be?"
"Yes," replied the master, "the listings are stacked on the platform
in the data center."
-- Geoffrey James, "The Tao of Programming"

Name: Anonymous 2008-09-13 8:31

The Tao gave birth to machine language. Machine language gave birth to the assembler.

The assembler gave birth to the compiler. Now there are ten thousand languages.

Each language has its purpose, however humble. Each language expresses the Yin and Yang of software. Each language has its place within the Tao.

But do not program in COBOL if you can avoid it.
