Getting into programming

Name: Slick Denis 2008-09-07 0:55

Alright lads?

Ever since I began being interested in computers, I've kind of wanted to gain the ability to program the computer. I've used Linux for three years and became somewhat familiar with the bash shell (but not very well, only knowing a handful of commands and different things)

I'm at a time with computers where I can think of ideas of programs I'd like to write (like a script to automate encoding & tagging of mp3s) but I just don't know how to do this kind of thing. I tried to write a bash script to do stuff like that, but my limited knowledge put a stop to that very quickly.

So, perhaps it's time I asked. I want to begin programming for simple but practical purposes, and I've not got any prior experience (other than a hello world program in C, some simple use of the bash shell).

What do you suggest? What should I do?

Thank you very much. I'm going to read HtDP, and then I'll read SICP.

HtDP raped Scheme pretty badly. It's just not the same without car and cdr ;_;

If you want to easily write working programs, use perl.
If you want satori, read SICP.
