You should copy the connect variable before you create the thread. It's not guaranteed that the thread you create runs immediately, so if your unlucky the main thread zeros out the connect variable, before the thread got a chance to copy them.

I see an infinite loop and plenty of sleep(). Didn't check much farther but you should look into using events / conditions / semaphores.
