I usually fake that one. If I'm trolling a forum and I manage to get the IP of the admin, I put it in there. Result: admin freaks the fuck out thinking he has some kind of malware on his machine, or (even better) doesn't recognize his IP and bans himself.

Nobody uses the X-Forwarded-For header. No forum software I know stores it. Exactly because it's so fucking worthless.

phpBB used to trust it back in 2.0.whatever. phpBB uses the actual IP address, but will also display X-Forwarded-For if a mod requests it. MyBB still trusts it.

and don't forget the countless addons that skiddies write ("hey we can detect if they're using a proxy and get their real IP from an X-Forwarded-For header") but neglect the fact that it can be spoofed.
