I've always thought it more natural for a saged FP to leave the thread timestamp uninitialized, causing it to appear ‘wherever’.

That's quite a nice idea, except that undefs in Perl can't be used as numbers and even comparing them to stuff produces an undef. Same with PHP.

Of course they can. undef == 0 and undef eq "". And I suppose leaving the thread down in a pool of 0-threads is an acceptable compromise.
