Don't read SICP. A year ago, I came here asking the same question you ask now. After having been given the predictable answer, I checked the SICP stuff and it seemed legit, so I went with it. Now, after a year, I know only SCHEME and HASKELL and a bit of Lojban.

1. Get yourself a nice BASIC interpreter with graphics and crap. Read the manual, make a bunch of little animations/games/whatever until you understand how it all works.
2. Install GCC. Find some simple open-source C programs. Learn how to compile and run them, then try changing bits of the code to make them behave differently.
3. Congratulations, you're a programmer.
