psychan

So, you want to build a psychan ..
----------------------------------

Venturing into new territory is a sign of curiousity, which is clearly a Good Thing.
I therefor applaud you. Don't be too confident though, some stuff you don't want to
get yourself involved in. Remember to remain vigilant.

And remain vigilant of vigilance itself; too much vigilance means you'll miss out on
some great things because you "didn't trust them". Remember to remain confident too.

Reflect properly;
and you will gain confidence through excellence
and excellence through confidence

What is a psychan?
------------------

It's nothing, it doesn't mean anything .. it's a new word, and for as long as we don't
know excactly what it is, it can be anything.

It can be like a fire, a place where you burn wood, and come to collect heath. It can be
a place where you can write and a place where you can read. Ultimately, for me, it is a
place for inspiration and tranquility.

Ultimately, for me, right now, it is this text. Sometimes, it is this entire website.
Usually, it is the entire world.

Who creates a psychan?
----------------------

Whoever chooses to create a psychan, he is the creator of that psychan. And so ultimatly,
because of the way things work, he becomes both the ultimate administrator of, and
responsible person for that psychan.

If you create for yourself the challenge of creating something, you take upon yourself
a certain responsibilty to finish it through until the end. From that comes the control
over the psychan; the power to have the last word .. and change what is there (until you
abandon it).

Wether or not your psychan will be succesfull depends both on how much you change things,
and how much you let them be. If this makes you feel insecure, you can put up rules and
regulations. If these make you feel insecure, you change or abandon them.

Always remember that this is your terrain, but that you yearn to share it with other
people. You might have the last word, but the group can always vote with their feet
and move away from it.

How does this particular psychan work?
--------------------------------------

I create my own rules, for my own reasons. I can attempt to explain my reasons to you,
but I could never explain them to myself, they're just there. So let's start with that.

As administrator of my own psychan online, I strive to make it usable for me and people
like me. I don't want to have to put too much work in it, I don't want to have the
feeling I'm not getting enough out of it.

Most of all, I don't want to have the feeling I'm making the psychan more important than
myself .. where I end up having to force myself to do stuff merely for the sake of the
psychan or its visitors.

I strive to keep the signal to noise ratio as high as possible. I don't really care
what's there, as long as it can be considered to be top quality for the visitors.

If, from time to time, this means inviting some people in and shutting others out..
I let it be that way.

I want my psychan to keep growing, even when I realize that I have only a small amount
of control over the speed at which this happens, it's the entire group of visitors that
decides wether or not it's succesfull.

This is why I pay close attention to any feedback I recieve.

Look at it this way.

On most browsers, you can bring up your browsing history by pressing Control-H. (No, this is not going to become a discussion of werecows.) On Firefox, this brings up a sidebar that shows up on the left side of the window. If you put your mouse over the edge of the sidebar, the cursor will turn into a different kind of arrow. By clicking and dragging it, you can move the edge of the sidebar back and forth. You are, to put it another way, manipulating the border between the normal window and the history window. By moving the mouse, you can increase the portion of the window devoted to either part. In a more extreme view of this situation, you're increasing or decreasing the amount of existence the sidebar has.

Now, let's apply this idea to something more abstract. Look out your window. If you don't live in a highly urbanized area, you should be able to see the horizon. Think of this as the border between the land and the sky. The land and sky are obviously distinguishable thanks to this boundary. Now, if you were to "drag" the sash between the sky and the land, or to manipulate the border between land and sky, you would end up causing the sky to become larger and the land to become smaller, or vice versa. An effect of this might be to cause something that was just on the ground to suddenly be hundreds of feet in the air. Truly a frightening situation to be in. So, look at it this way - manipulating the border between two physical things shifts whatever balance there is in the interaction between those things. Alternatively, by manipulating the border between two things, you can change the manner in which they exist.

Still, this isn't *that* abstract, since it's still dealing with real things in the real world. Many believe that in this world, there are those things that are true, and those that obviously aren't. This divides reality into two extremes: truth and falsehood. But, since we have two extremes, logically one can imagine a boundary between those two extremes - the border between truth and lies. If one were to manipulate this border, suddenly things that were pure fantasy (flying pigs, for the sake of argument) have become reality - or things from reality have ceased to exist. This is how Yukari is said to have invaded the moon - by manipulating the border between truth and lies, as applied to the reflection of the moon on a pond, she was able to make the reflection of the moon into a manifestation of the actual moon, and so send her youkai army onto it. This is what's truly amazing about Yukari's power - the ability to manipulate the border between completely abstract concepts allows her to fundamentally change reality as we know it (at least in terms of two abstract concepts).

the programmer simply programs,
in the moment

not trying to please, anger or comfort
not anyone or anything, not even himself
he just lets his thoughts flow

and when he's done he knows,
he compiles,
he runs.

and he trusts you
the user
to do the rest of the work

there's nothing here
but bits and bytes
they don't mean anything
except in your head
