The prototype was done with M-x artist-mode. The first release was done with JavE (http://www.jave.de/). I used a transparent gimp window with the mspaint snake loaded to draw the ascii form. I could tell you a shitload of another interesting stories, like why the eye is a ``p'' and not an ``o''.
