Vim tutorial

Name: Anonymous 2008-04-25 4:26

I'm doing a vim tutorial because Emacs hurts my fingers and I think the modal style of vim will be easier on my fingers.

This made me LOL for some reason:

Move the cursor to the beginning of the first line, for example, and type xxxxxxx (eight x’s) to delete the first eight characters on the line.
Can you guess what it is yet?

C-a C-u 8 <del>

or

C-a M-8 <del>

YEAH EMACS IS CLEARLY SUPERIOR.

Name: Anonymous 2008-04-25 4:36

Use viper-mode.

Name: Anonymous 2008-04-25 4:37

>>2
Actually the Vim equivalent of C-a C-u 8 <del> would be 08x.

Name: Anonymous 2008-04-25 4:39

>>4
You mean 8x.
Generally, N<sequence> repeats <sequence> N times, so shove C-a C-u 8 del up yers.

Name: Anonymous 2008-04-25 4:43

>>5
Are you a fucking retard?
- The Vim equivalent of C-a is 0
- The Vim equivalent of C-u 8 <del> is 8x
- The Vim equivalent of C-a C-u 8 <del> is 08x

>>6
No you fucking idiot, C-a C-u 8 <del> is supposed to delete 8 characters from the buffer which is exactly what vim does with 8x.
fuck, IHBT?

C-a C-u 8 <del> is supposed to delete 8 characters from the beginning of the line. If you don't know anything about Emacs, why must you keep arguing, fucktard?

OP here... so... does Vim do Scheme syntax indentation or what? I don't want syntax highlighting, but I'd like to be able to press tab in the middle of a line and that that line be indented correctly. Or perhaps Ctrl-C TAB or something?

For lisp get emacs with slime it's unlikely you'll find anything better.

Name: Anonymous 2008-04-25 8:26

>>26
Well, as I said in OP, as a long time Emacs user, I'm trying out Vim.

Name: Anonymous 2008-04-25 8:49

use '>>' and '<<' to indent and de-indent

'='+movement is the re-indent command; '=%' (as in: reindent anything between current and opposing paren) is a very useful combination.

i think vim will probably set lisp mode (:setf lisp) for .scm files; but you might want to consider explicitly setting expandtab, like this:

au BufNewFile,BufRead *.scm         set expandtab
