The Darkness

I couldn't find any bearing. It was pitch black. But I could hear. Strange and fantastic, distorting and moving noises, all around me. They'd said not to let go of my SICP book, but the fall had knocked it out of my hands. I felt around for it, patting the ground around me in a circle. My hands came across something long and round. A flash light. I dared not turn it on for fear of what I might wake up in this place, but it would make do for a weapon. I decided that walking in one direction without turning once would lead me to the edge of this darkness. When a man is alone in the darkness, his mind plays tricks and elaborate practical jokes on him. Distortions and ruptures in the sound and fabric of my environment broke my step. I tripped and dropped the flash light which stumbled, I could hear, a few feet from me to the left. An electric shock went down my spine as I heard a grunt come from the same direction, and foot steps which grew exponentially in speed. I reached for the flash light instinctively as a weapon, and when I grasped it I heard not a sound. Curiosity and fear swept threw me for I clicked the flash light and in the same second I swear and have sweared since; I will not forget what I saw:
