PHP downloading bullshit

So I have a script I made for work that involved ftp (why they wanted this don't even ask. i explained its better with say filezilla and related)

anyway the script works flawlessly on my server connecting to their server. I can rename, delete, upload, and download, create dir etc etc.

use to work on their server too until a recent upgrade to dedicated. Now everything works except upload and download. uploads become corrupt (but there in filesize) downloads are all corrupt too.

what the fuck?

if connecting remotely works it must be a local php issue right?

This reminds me...  I once read a story about someone that wrote an FTP (FTP Transfer Protocol) server in Lisp, and it was super stable and stuff.  It was like a Paul Graham essay, but I don't think he wrote it.
