If someone changed the ownership of the root directory, and can no longer ssh into it, can you use Knoppix to mount the drive and change ownership back to root?

Argh, I want to shoot the retards that suggest "LOL DO REPAIR PERMISSIONS AND ZAP PRAM" for everything. Funny thing is, that would have actually helped 1-san if he was running a superior Unix system.
