FUCKING HATE REDDIT

Name: Anonymous 2008-03-15 1:12

Okay, let me start with this: FUCK. REDDIT. I really hate that faggot site and
its users. It's really bad and we need to find a solution for it. There's a
steaming pile of shit coming from that webshite, and it certainly isn't just
trolls. It's retards. Redditards, poluting our lovely /prog/. Through the text
I'll use "reddit" but I mean "programming.reddit.com" and not the whole reddit
community, which while still full of BS not relevant to /prog/'s polution.

THE(IR) PROBLEM
If you have an account at reddit or even browse it, and you're not a redditard
yourself you know what I'm talking about; Fucking idiots overusing internet
memes, exactly like what the xkcd faggot does. Doing so, they believe they
belong in some "elite" community of computer experts that like esoteric jokes.
You should understand their mental state by now: "I can't fucking program but I
might make esoteric jokes that apparently computer experts like and maybe, just
maybe others will think I'm an expert myself!". Fucking morons. If one takes a
moment from his day to browse reddit, might like the topics. Let's see what we
got: "How to * with Python *", "A simple * with *", "* in 10 steps", "*: the
revolutionary blog/software/other", "Using * for fun & profit". One might think,
"ah, a nice community. I'll stay a while with them". The other day wakes up only
to find the same topics with changed blog links and titles. If you don't believe
me try it yourself. (yeah, ofcourse there are the retarded "points too, how
could a faggot community live without them? Look: wikipedia, digg, ..)

WHY /prog/ SUCKS
It wasn't long ago that reddit faggots weren't aware of /prog/. I believe, 4-5
months ago /prog/ was clean of all the faggotry & spam. Back then a thread could
make your day, and everyone was contributing content, which ofcourse lead to
funny memes et al, unlike all these self-proclaimed "memes". (notice any simile
with the redditards? self proclaimed computer experts & funny or some shit) If
you are not a /prog/ regular or oldie you might have not noticed, you might
think that it's been like that from the beginning. But it wasn't. Even worse,
you might think that these posts are from trolls, but they are not. Ok, maybe
some are, but trolls are not retarded (as some may think). I'm a big time troll
and I don't think most of you understand trolling.

THE SOLUTION
Okay, now that I bothered you with my text, I'm all ears to see what you got to
say about this issue. I cannot think of a solution to get rid of faggots, but I
don't want to see /prog/ become a cesspool like reddit. I wish the old expert
programmers would come back..

Excuse the lack of bbcode in my post but I have to haste.

THANK YOU. Fortunately there are still some people left who actually understand /prog/ and anonymous BBS/imageboard culture in general.

Yes, it would be nice to have some serious discussion (nobody's stopping you from starting one).

No, you can't if you use one of the many technologies that /prog/ dislikes. And I'm not talking about ENTERPRISE bullshit, but solid stuff that isn't scheme.
Any thread of the form "what do you think about" or "should I use _____ for ______" will yield more trolls than good replies, so only non-regulars start this kind of threads, and they can't manage to steer the discussion right afterwards.

Name: Anonymous 2008-03-16 20:03

>>46
If you insist on tying the goodness of a discussion to the ratio of trolls to real replies rather than the quality of the real replies, you'll find there isn't a single anonymous textboard out there that has any ``good'' discussion.

rechan.da.ru/prog/
sovietrussia.org/code/

I think 4chan's /prog/ is starting to get too big and full of memes (yes 39-san, they're important, but when they start becoming the bulk of the postings, the board goes the way of /b/.) Start decentralizing.

/prog/ has more quality posts than /code/. It has a lower ratio of quality posts to shit posts, sure, but I'd rather have some memery to look at than have one post every six months.

rechan is too much tripfaggotry.

That's all that's left when you remove all the idiots from /pr/.

/prog/ and proggit cater to the same group of people, just with different attitudes. lot's of people here surf both sides but that's not the problem.

the problem is the common newfaggot turning /prog/ into a "memes only" medium. he comes here, reads two threads and after 5 minutes thinks by himself "OH LOL THIS IS SO FUNNY LETS TRY IT MAKE A NEW THREAD TOO" ... and whatever he comes up with it is usually complete fucking crap ;_;

so the second time he doesn't try to come up with something, he just posts some regurgitated shit he saw was funny somewhere else (even if it doesn't fucking make any sense in this context) and OH WOW PPL LIKE IT SO I MUST BE GOODZ

he gets his quick fix, people respond, but he doesn't understand that the only people who go LULZ and go along with it are faggots just like him. faggots who are messing up our boards with their shit.

The worst part is of course that they talk about this new brilliant forum they found wherever they go (which ever cancer pit they came from) so they bring in more cancer. so it spreads. good threads either disappear quickly or stay on top and get trolled. after a while the initial user base can't take it any more, they leave and what's left is something like digg.

the solution? I'd say more moderators + publish IP when banned, tell users to LURK MOAR BEFORE POSTING. sagebomb every shitthread. also we need a GOOD copy pasta to go along with this, it should be an EFFECTIVE copy pasta that explains WHY we do this. I think this combination of education and punishment, if executed correctly, stands the best chance of succeeding (not just here btw)

alternatively we could flee to another board and leave the newfags amongst each other but that's not a real solution, the cancer spreads everywhere. we've been running for too long, i'd say we go head on with this and don't give up on /prog/.

Then why don't you guys populate it like you did with /prog/ back in '04? The guy's telling you all to regrow /prog/ the way you want it to be, not just migrate to some other shitty "community"

We need a /prog9k/

The forced_anon_chat thread was actually pretty nice, until /b/ got word of it. Then anonchat exploded overnight (I think something like 100+ users simultaneously at one time) and died a horrible death a few days later.

Because only two people are complaining about /prog/. The rest of us are quite happy here.

Name: Anonymous 2008-03-16 21:10

[spoilers]/prog/[/spoiler]rammers seeking their fix of serious discussion tend to hang out in #sicp anyway. A lack of serious discussion on /prog/ itself isn't that terrible.

I've been here long enough to go through a couple of anger stages, an abandonment stage, and even a spam meme stage. (That last one was very short. It's just stupid; there is no two ways about that.)

Now I'm writing scripts that take the pages and filter out posts that match a list of phrases like "my other car". I would have the script look for specific tripcodes, but the good posters rarely use them. I only use one when I have something worthwhile to write. Notice I'm not using one on this post.

I've done this before with phpBB forums and newsgroups. They're not anonymous, and my filter picked out users I marked as 'smart' or 'funny'. It was pretty efficient; I got a lot more useful information in a lot less time than it takes to read through all the shit in this place.

writing your own software to crawl boards seems like a lot of work; it's not like there's a Microformat that gets used so you'll end up writing one version of the software for each type of boardsoftware, no?

(still /r/ on those scripts though =)

You'd be better off learning Greasemonkey than trying to set up my stuff, which is low level wget/bash/awk/gtk-server spread across several scripts.

Use Greasemonkey to mark offensive phrases in red so you can visually skip them faster. That's a relatively easy starting point.
