i'm an student at a well known university. they took my hard drive out of my computer cuz they think there was a virus on it spamming the network but it was probably my dc++ client. they said i could come to the IT department to get my important info off of it. what are my rights?

Im assuming you have a desktop computer at your university? I have a hard time believing they would pull the HD out of a laptop. If you have a desktop that is on their site, then you have to pretty much face the fact that that it is on their grounds and you have to run your computer by their rules.
