I also thought that by working through the book I would learn Common Lisp indirectly through learning Scheme.

sicp is just a book. you dont need it to learn.
exercises are just suggestions. you dont need them to understand concepts.

If you read sicp, you will learn.
If you do the exercises, you will understand the concepts.
