Simple Question(s)

Name: Anonymous 2008-02-10 12:21

What do you do for a living, people of /prog/? Do you like it, and why? Would you recommend it to others, or no?

Advice or other comments are welcome as well, say as much as you'd like. If we can get a good number of decent posts in this one thread, then I can just save it and it will never have to be asked again, since if anyone else does I can just point them to a rafb.

Just that I'm sick of these things showing up, and this seemed like a good way to kill it in the future instead of wasting time.

I do something completely unrelated to programming.
Yes, I would recommend a job completely unrelated to programming to a serious programmer.

Oh, by the way, fuck you. You're the same faggot asking about his future.

YHBT. YHL. HAND.

What is this thing that is "completely unrelated to programming" that is so awesome, exactly?

I work doing System Administration for motherfuckin' Apple. They keep their IT in-house, which has kept my job safe for awhile now. Its fairly easy and it pays well.

Computer Science isn't dead yet, fucker. Just STAY THE FUCK OUT OF DEVELOPER/PROGRAMMER JOBS! If I can leave you with one piece of advice, it would be that. Administrator jobs are still good, and if you can be a consultant you're all set. There are many shitty Managers in this field, so if you can actually be competent at that, go for it.

Also, getting a master's degree is a good idea. Puts you above all the shitheads just making their way through the Java schools, and lets you take advantage of the big problems we're having in the US now with lack of talent and lack of people going into STEM

I'm a welder making 17/hr with a 25 per diem. I used to study programming at a university, but I said fuck that when I realized programming doesn't pay the bills anymore.

Now I study instrumentation at a small two-year institution.

17? congratz, I make double that working a help desk at a big corporation. They pretty much pay me to surf the internet and to occasionally update Windows on some machines, or fix simple problems. I have yet to have any problems with outsourcing at all.

Programming doesn't pay. This is right. You need to find the computer jobs that aren't software development-focused.

btw, are you >>2 ? If not I'd also like to know what he does, if yes then lulz

I sell various goods not related to computers.
I profit 2k/month
I'm 27 and I consider myself a very good programmer, I could get a programming job really easily.
Instead, I prefer to write open source code almost anonymously and occasionally troll.

is clever enough to sometimes 'get' the point of a very obvious joke, but not really clever enough to quite grasp the concept of 'humor'.

Wow, 24k/year? That's even worse than the welder.

Way to fail hardcore there, buddy. I can make more than that in a simple internship, let alone a real job.

If that's all you need, there are lots of easy jobs in CompSci that pay more than that. They'd be on the low scale for CompSci but they'd still pay more than you're making atm, and would probably be easier than being a salesman.

I'm "Tech Guy" (yes that is my actual job title) at a local library. Mostly involves DBA / sever admin / managing the blogs of a bunch of old women, with a touch of stupid networking shit and basic tech support.

I got a BS in CIS (Inf0rmation SyZt3mz LAWL) and its way below me and I only make $31k/yr but it's really fucking laid back, easy, ENJOYABLE work. I spend 20 hours a week reading and working on personal projects, occasionally covering for an actual clerk (which I used to be).
