Administration

Hi, /prog/. Long time lurker, first time poster.

Basically, I'm starting college soon for computer science, and I wanted to know what you thought about it? What I mean is, I've programmed for awhile now and have built databases in the past, and I think I would like to do Database Administration for a job after graduation. Is this alright, or am I naive of the field? Also, do you think I should be worried at all about all that offshoring stuff I hear so much about? Or is there still enough work available out there that as long as I'm actually competent and can do that work, I won't really need to worry?

Thanks for the advice.

Really? I saw something about Electrical Engineering, but other then that idk. I'm kinda new, I've only checked this board sparatically, sorry

I can't speak for all schools, but...

A degree in comp sci will cover A LOT more than database stuff. By the time I've graduated, I'll only have taken two database courses. All the rest deal with software design/engineering and getting down & dirty with software development.

With that said, going into DB is still definitely a great choice with a comp sci degree. I've worked with databases at an internship for the past two years and I can definitely say that almost everything I've learned in school can be directly applied to what I do at work.

As far as outsourcing, I'll quote Joel, ``There's still an incredible shortage of the really good programmers, here and in India...really good programmers do have jobs."

I'm mostly in it for the paper, and if I decide to get Masters I can focus even more on it. You need a BS for a lot of decent jobs in CompSci, so better to just get it and be done with it.

As for ``really good programmers", is there any kind of a scale or something that I can rate myself against to see how ``good" i actually am, and to see how good I really need to be (and thus what I might have to learn that I don't know yet)? I already have the innate talent and love for the stuff, its more a matter of "accomplishments" so I can focus on what I should improve upon, and what I might not need for Db Administration. I'm hoping education in college can put me ahead of the competition and start me off with a better salary from the get-go, though.

you need a BS for any decent job right out of college and for most (read: almost all) decent jobs that require experience (e.g. lead SOFTWARE ENGINEER, etc.). i emphasize right out of college for the fact that experience alone can get you places. but if you really want a good job, a BS is pretty much MANDATORY.
Master's degrees are usually preferred over BS, but the industry isn't at the point where a someone with a master's is regarded much more highly than someone with just a BS. if you want a PhD, you're pretty much just gonna be a professor doctorates cost too much for employers except Google et al.

As for ``really good programmers", is there any kind of a

Appreciate the advice, although most I already knew.

Masters still puts me a bit above the BS's that everyone seems to already have; it may just make the difference. I also have the opportunity to double major in something like Electrical Engineering, would that look better for future employment, even in something like DBA?

I looked at the ICPC thing. I believe I'm a pretty good programmer, and I understand a decent amount of abstraction and how to do algorithms, but damn, MIT? How the fuck am I going to stand up against motherfuckin' MIT?! I'm a decent programmer but I'm hardly a genius. My main facets that I'm hoping will propel me through my career are my ``soft"-er skills. I'm great with communication (and breaking down abstract ideas for people who don't understand them as well, such as [eventually] management), I have good social skills as well as being great at maintaining a professional persona, and the real kicker: I can actually write. I hoping that plus my above-average level of programming and abstraction ability (Read: I can currently program in C, Java, and Python, and know my way around a few of the different Linux OS's as well as Solaris systems, and have been programming since I was 15. Not a genius, but I do know my fair share. I guess SQL too, but SQL is exactly hard) will allow me to be successful, since from what I hear many people in the IT profession don't possess both (i.e. if they're technical geniuses they are socially retarded, or vice-versa).

I know my competition also has a BS. But many people (even in the private schools like WPI) come from Java Schools, and even more couldn't code their way out of a SegFault. The college I'm going to teaches C and C++ before moving on to more specialized things that you can choose later on. All that ``abstract bullshite" should help me in the future, even if I'm only a DBA, right? Also, this is why I have considered a M.Sc., the double major in EE, or perhaps both (just because double majoring here mostly just waives over a few of the frills courses and kills a bunch of Gen Ed's in favor of EE, so its fairly easy to pull off)

That was kinda long, srry :(

Very true.

Honestly, I have no idea. Theoretically, a dbl major should make you look better. But I'm not an employer, so I could be dead wrong.

How the fuck am I going to stand up against motherfuckin' MIT?!
If you have the ability, I think its better to compete than not. The ICPC involves the world's best programmers, the simple act of just being there is more than what most college programmers do. Maybe you'll beat MIT, maybe not, but being placed at the top of your school's programmers list is more than enough to impress employers.
A couple years ago, my school Baylor Univ. hosted the ICPC and its a helluva experience. IBM sponsors it and it gets better and better and better every year.

All that ``abstract bullshite" should help me in the future, even if I'm only a DBA, right?
Of course!!! The ``abstract bullshite" only improves your problem solving skills.
