Question

Name: Anonymous 2008-02-06 14:49

Can you be too old for trying to get good at programming? I don't want to be AWESOME but I want it to work somewhat decently. I'm 21 years old.

And I practically flunked 12th grade math. That's how bad I am.

Name: Anonymous 2008-02-06 14:50

No.

Cool. I was thinking of starting with non-programming like html just to start getting used to typing in notepad (yeah I've never learned even html), do you have any tips on directions I should take?

Name: Anonymous 2008-02-06 15:00

Try it, let us know.

Get a copy of the Visual Quickstart Guide for HTML. I have a copy of the 5th edition that I use for quick reference; it seems like a good place to start.

Buying a book for HTML when the internet is literally full of source code for you to learn from is retarded.

Name: Anonymous 2008-02-06 15:24

>>6
Yes, let's learn from the source code of some random site.
Though I'm not sure that book would be better\ldots

ONE WORD, w3schools, THREAD OVER.

Name: Anonymous 2008-02-06 16:57

Then pirate it. Either way, it'll teach you better habits than reading the source on random pages. 99% of HTML on the Internet is crap. You really don't want to be a crap HTML coder.

Emacs or the presumptuously named Acme.

Terrible!

When I use an editor, I don't want eight extra KILOBYTES of worthless help screens and cursor positioning code!  I just want an EDitor!!
Not a ``viitor''.  Not a ``emacsitor''.  Those aren't even WORDS!!!!
ED! ED! ED IS THE STANDARD!!!

Name: Anonymous 2008-02-06 18:31

What exactly is an emacsitor? The author never really explained that one :(

I've seen this before, what exactly does s/x/y mean? Is this a prog meme?

REGULAR EXPRESSIONS

Name: Anonymous 2008-02-06 18:47

I know what Regular Expressions (regex) are, but I've never seen this syntax before.

Name: Anonymous 2008-02-06 18:50

Twenty three here
I googled regular expressions, and s/x/y doesn't mean anything special. In fact, the forward slash isn't a metacharacter, so saying s/x/y simply means to match "s/x/y"

If you made it that far, why not go all the way and figure out for yourself? PROTIP: man sed.

If you look at the HTML it's actually:

Actually, it originates from a program called QED, originally written in the late 1960s by Butler Lampson and Peter Deutsch. Their version had the command SUBSTITUTE /x/ FOR /y/. Ken Thompson (of Unix fame) then wrote a version for MIT's CTSS system, and shortened the substitution command to just s/x/y/ - and, crucially, added regular expression support to it. Thompson later wrote Unix's standard editor ed, taking a lot of features from QED, including s//. It was the massive spread of Unix that so popularised this idiom.

I already knew that. Why on Earth did you reply to me?

The reply was mainly for >>26, but you also implied that s// was from sed, which of course came quite late on in the history of s//.

In no way did I imply that.

If you are a 45-year old geezer then yes, maybe it's a little late to start something completely new.  Maybe.

Not even close. In a typical case, you would still have almost half of your life left.
