Good starting spot?

Ok.. so I'm a college student interested in learning how to program.. but, not interested in taking college courses on it.

most people seem to suggest starting at html.. however, html is somewhat impractical seeing as I am not making a website..

Can anyone recommend a good starting language with some level of practicality?
