i've tried others but fact is that programmers and geeks often have huge egos
shiichan type boards, wakaba, kareha, whatever they're all called, basically anonymous boards are better for this sort of thing
first of all not everyone can ask perfect questions or present valid arguments all the time, we all make mistakes, /prog/ makes people less afraid of this because if you had a registered username those past mistakes would haunt you forever at the community of your choice
months later, even if you do a good job, people will judge your post and your opinions based on your character, your reputation, i strongly believe that this influences their replies and how they behave towards you, if they treat you as a n00b from the get go or if they try to pay attention
here this is not an issue
SECOND, the trolls come with the territory, not only is this 4chan (aka troll central) but this is also an anonymous board, the trick is to see through the trolling bullshit, which i have no problem doing since i just ignore it
once you do that you will see that you actually get valid replies here, you get replies from expert programmers and real help, at least i have whenever i've asked a serious question about programming
and this is my motivation for loving /prog/@4chan

Seconded. Here, "you are what you post", basically. It's also a lot more open in the anon boards -- I got sick of playing the "am I going to get banned for this post" game and the namefaggotry of regular forums ("I've been here a lot longer than you, or I'm the admin, therefore what I say is right and everyone follows along or get banned"). Registration (or re-registration, I've been banned more times than I remember) is also a fucking pain in the ass. Also, fuck forced politeness and that "don't say it unless it's positive" bullshit. Free anonymous speech FTW.
I also participate in a namefag forum for programming competitions we have, but there we just respect each other's right to free speech so it's closer to an anonboard but with names (we're all admins of the forum, we know we can delete others posts/etc. but we risk an adminwar so we usually don't.)
I'm feeling really keen, for some of that good ol' green
