Administration Concerns, College Advice

Name: Anonymous 2007-12-08 21:45

As a computer science student, I have been wondering about what would be the best field to go into, that would be fun and interesting with more of a relaxed environment (Read: the less stress, the better. There's a reason I'm not going into Electrical Engineering, like my dad).

Since one of my friends is planning on going into Database Administration, I was wondering about administration fields in general. Specifically, System Administration. I do some of that kind of work in my spare time already, and tend to enjoy it. Thing is, the research I've done at places like SAGE have turned up poorly. At lot of concerns about outsourcing, which is a concern for many other IT jobs as well.

Any advice for a college freshman in my position? (P.S.: Interestingly enough, I actually do attend one of those increasingly rare C colleges, that works in a linux environment and absolutely hates windows/java. Seeing as I started programming with Java in high school, I've actually found C and all the theory behind it with pointers and the like *much* more interesting. Also, I hope it puts some more points in my column when it comes to hireability.)

Thanks!

Way to be vague. "fun" and "interesting" are incredibly subjective, and pretty every field of computer science has parts that are interesting. Just continue taking classes and you'll probably figure out what you like by your senior year if your college's CS curriculum isn't retarded. Also, go talk to an advisor. They exist for these sort of questions.

I'm mostly wondering about the good fields that i have to choose from these days. What's available that doesn't suck (i.e. isn't being outsourced)?

Outsourced workers can't replace broken disks, you won't be losing your job anytime soon (unless the servers are moved to India as well, but that would be a bad idea most of the time).

Anything that pays well will be high stress.  Most things that don't pay well will also be.  Based on your statements, I suggest you consider being a career garbage man.  You'll get reasonably good pay, you won't have to stress out in college, and you'll get big-ass arms that all the chicks will dig.

Not to mention having to deal with the mob (or other local organized crime) in many areas. Could be a good or a bad thing, depending on how you look at it. In either case, you'll end up seeing a lot of shit that you didn't really want to.
