I want to have a black background in my EMACS, but the dark screen doesn't illuminate my keyboard, so I can't code without an external light source.

Accidentally pressing a key is a pet peeve of mine. That's why I use EMACS, it's simply impossible to accidentally score a combo like C-x-c.

You can't be serious. You are a non-touchtyping computer programmer? I've heard of such people, but their very existance is only based on second-hand rumors. If you've written code for some time, you just must have picked up touch-typing by osmosis.

Half my programmer coworkers fail to touchtype.

Either learn to touch type, or get a Saitek Eclipse keyboard. They are backlit :-) In fact, I'd recommend a Saitek Eclipse anyway. I don't terribly care about the back light, but I do like the larger than normal space bar, the fact that the function keys are closer to the main keyboard than on most and the fact that the keyboard is a little heavier than most. The feel of the keys is nice too, IMO. An all round great keyboard for coding AND gaming.
