GOOD THINGS ABOUT /PROG/:
- No ``I used something else than Java/C# for the first time in my life yesterday and therefore must write an excessively long, content-free post with a profound, insightful tone about my first steps in that language'' people à la reddit
- No namefaggotry-related problems such as blawgosphere-style® circlejerking
- No `Web 2.0' hipsters
- Some (unfortunately quite rare) good trolls
- Some (unfortunately quite rare) interesting discussion

- Nothing ever happens apart from people calling each other morons for every reason imaginable.

I agree. Sure, we get a fair few idiots on here. But forums with moderation (as in, the moderators will remove posts they don't like) almost always end up as zones of forced politeness and an unwillingness to deviate from the status quo. Besides which, it just pisses people off having their posts deleted.
Note that assigning a score to a post as Slashdot does isn't really moderation, as it is completely advisory and can be ignored by the user.
