So yah, starting C++, got any decent compillers / ides to suggest?  Preferably one for Win and one for a *nix / *nix like OS.

Comeau C++ with the Dinkumware standard library is a good combination. You don't need an IDE, just use a good text editor like vim or Emacs.

vim and emacs are not text editors.
vim is an IDE and emacs is an operating system

also, icc for windows, gcc for linux.
There's also lcc and tendra.

Notepad and MSVC++.

I know it's not opensource, but it produces damn good code (better than GCC most of the time).

icc produces better assembly than MSVC and gcc for intel.
gcc produces assembly for nearly anything out there.

Almost all of the software recommended (certainly Comeau C++, Emacs, vim and gcc) runs on Windows.

If you want flexibility, you know what to use.

I failed. I should have said: it's nice, flexible, and most of all, it comes with a sane interface, sane keys, and sane simple way to redefine them should you prefer others.
