Computer Science == Dead-end degree?

Name: Anonymous 2007-09-14 8:06 ID:fWZq9ERZ

Truth.

False.

Why would you claim that?

Outsourcing, fierce competition, not enough specialized fields to work in, jobs going to people with practical experience (engineers, ICT guys).
CS is only good if you want to become a lecturer/professor/doctor in it, also if you aim to advance the state of the art. If not, enjoy being a waiter or working at a call centre (the lowest and most humiliating job in IT)

My advice for anyone who has just started a CS degree is to GTFO of it immediately, and enter computer engineering or some sort of IT degree.

i was cs, 3 months out of college making 25 an hour sitting at coffee shops doing bullshit web stuff, while all my friends who were politcal sci/bio are working their asses off at 9-5's making less many and have to wear business clothes.

so yes, definitely worth it if you are good at computers

All of the above only applies in Amerikkka

Or India, where CS degrees can be acquired via mail.

Would you mind running us through a typical work day?
Also what sort of attire do you wear at work?

Name: Anonymous 2007-09-14 11:41 ID:N/DFyMBU

umm wake up around 9. show up for work around 10:30, half hour late. put on dirty jeans and t shirt. meet my boss at a coffee shop, make some .net web sites for sub prime lending websites. have lunch. comment on girl with big tits walking by. do more sites/look for jobs/whatever til around 6:30. well probably get an office eventually

What would Dijkstra do?

Name: Anonymous 2007-09-14 12:23 ID:N/DFyMBU

fuck off

Consider >>5-9 dangerous

Name: Anonymous 2007-09-14 16:49 ID:bxp9ObRI

so wait what.
if one were to intend to become a career programmer, would one:
get a computer science bachelor's, specialize, work on prominent or innovative open source projects, get internships
OR
not become a programmer as you cannot get a job as a programmer, ever.

i am confused.

maybe to the fags who would rather toy around with their theory languages like lisp instead of actually do work

Name: Anonymous 2007-09-14 19:03 ID:wU99N7KF

>>17
Lispers have more time to toy around since we finish our work so much faster.

Name: Anonymous 2007-09-14 19:05 ID:Heaven

>>18
that's because they do their work in more practical languages like quantum brainfuck.

Name: Anonymous 2007-09-14 19:51 ID:JHqlnXAi

>>18
they finish their work faster because they have no work in the first place
no employer in their right mind would give a job to someone who only knows toy languages
