How did they do it? I'm not talking about that panorama bullshit but about 'Seadragon'. How can you process such huge amounts of visual data so quickly? It brings my PC to its knees looking at gigapixel images but this is supposedly resolution independent.

Scalable image formats (e.g. jpeg2k) have a neat feature that allows you to extract a low quality/resolution approximation of an image by decoding only beginning of the compressed bitstream. Could be useful here as it is quite a bit more efficient than decoding the whole image and then scaling it down.
