You don't write long lambdas on a daily basis do you?

Meh. Here's a multiline lambda:
f = (lambda x:
         something
     and something_else
     ...)

The only thing you cannot do from lambdas are statements. If you need such, simply do:
def _(x):
    statement 1
    statement 2
    ...
f = _

The second reads better if you need statements. Sure, I would like to have a better way to define multiline lambdas, without having to use temporary function names, but every language sucks. It's a matter of choosing the one that sucks less among the appropriate languages for the job you want to do, and Python usually sucks the least.
