I might end up learning some Perl programming for my job.

What can you guys tell me about it? Any tips?

So far my programming experience doesn't go much further than some C++ and basic Java. lol

thx

Forget about Perl; laern Java and the .NET framework to write ENTERPRISE QUALITY PROGRAMS WITH SCALABLE SOLUTIONS FOR THE IT INDUSTRY

The work i'm going to be doing, configuring my company's LDAP setup and how employees connect to the intranet and Bugzilla, requires some Perl coding (according to the boss). A few days prior, when he asked if I was interested in helping him, he asked me about my C++ knowledge and mentioned I might do some more work with it as well. But so far no more talk of C++.

Anybody have experience with LDAP?

Perl is fun. It has a hard learning curve, but when you get there, you'll enjoy programming.

Perl also has a HUEG amount of modules available on CPAN that will ease your workload.

That's not good for employment though. What you want to write is ENTERPRISE SOLUTIONS with at least 500KLOC.

This will be your life. Though I'd rather do Perl than Java or C++.

You are not your Perl script.
You are not your fucking regular expression.

Protip: Perl regex are the Perl feature I like the most. When I say /"#(=)%/"(#)TY"()/&"?/%(%=!"/$?, I mean the code outside regex. And oh, wait, let's make it /"# = %/" # TY" /&"?/% %=!"/$?, because omitting parenthesis makes it so clear and macho. And one word, the defaulted $_ parameter, but only for some functions and in ways you don't always expect. Go Perl.

Read Conway's OO perl.

Read the Perl Style Guide or whatever the fuck it is called.

Those are the 2 best perl books to read.
