Questions will follow!

Why does Emacs say C-h will launch the help system when it does what ^H usually does (backspace)?

Name: Anonymous 2007-06-06 8:44 ID:03K+hD0r

How can I make meta work?  M-x just gives me an ø.

Name: Anonymous 2007-06-06 8:47 ID:Heaven

use elvis instead.
unless you want something easy to learn. then you should use mined. but if you wanted something easy to learn you wouldn't be trying to learn emacs.

Because RMS decided so in the Bronze Age and everyone who cares has remapped it. (define-key global-map [(control h)] backward-delete-char-untabify) to fix.

>>3
Depends on your environment and kind of Emacs.

Name: Anonymous 2007-06-06 8:55 ID:Heaven

>>5
Gah. (define-key global-map [(control h)] 'backward-delete-char-untabify)

Name: Anonymous 2007-06-06 8:55 ID:XT6TKuRU

Emacs tries to be a powerful editor with shortcuts for every command, but fails because these shortcuts are braindamaged and the way Emacs works is just counter-intuitive. Get Kate, PSPad, or something like that, use the standard keys you've learnt, then define your own for the more advanced features as you like.

Oh. And maybe I should actually read your comment. Someone has already remapped it for you.

Using Emacs simply for text editing is not a very bright idea. What makes Emacs better than the rest is the fact that it has a lot of utilities not strictly related to text editing integrated into it.

I'm learning GNU Emacs so I can be a GNU/Fag, I don't care about your shitty editors.  If I want some editing done, I use Vim.

>>5,6
Well, that changed nothing.  C-h still works as backspace.

See >>8. Also, (define-key global-map [(control h)] 'help)

>>11
Ah, I now understand what you wrote in >>8.

Hmm... what you posted still doesn't work.

Is there any way of not having the error messages upon startup go away in less than a second without interaction?

Name: Anonymous 2007-06-06 9:16 ID:03K+hD0r

>>11
Wait, that did indeed change something.  It now says F1 is the key to use for help...

Name: Anonymous 2007-06-06 9:23 ID:XT6TKuRU

(GNU/Fag? >>1) => #t

Name: Anonymous 2007-06-06 9:35 ID:Heaven

>>14
What version are you using? That works for me for 22.

GNU Emacs 22.1.1

It might be that pressing ^H shows DEL in the ... thingy in emacs, same as backspace.
