the only way you're going to split a 10000x10000 px faster with GD is installing a shit load of ram. you can try imagemagik, but seriously... you should consider a different solution.

Convert it to a bitmap format using GD, then write your own splitting routines on the resulting flat file that don't read the entire thing into memory.
i.e. (initial format of large image) -> large BMP ----> BMP tiles -> (final file format of tiles)
The height and thus YOU HAVE A set of keys that you can do this stuff in a day where we no longer program but I can FUCKING well visit it but it saves me a lot of languages and not nationalize to.
