Automating YouTube downloads

I'm trying to write a script to automatically download a YouTube .flv video given a URL or video ID.

From looking at the various Firefox extensions that do this, it seems that there is some kind of other variable that you must include in order to get the video.

Anybody else encountered this before? Or done this before?
