We haven't had one of these flamefest in a while -- are there still users of other inferior editors around here?

Lol, notepad fails. Enjoy your line break fuckups or use Wordpad.

You guys just don't get it, Wordpad is supreme. It runs on all computers capable of Windows, is easy to use and has lots of customization options available (not too many to make it confusing). You can edit configuration files with it or write school papers.

There are some editors under Linuxes (Emacs) that come close, but none of them are as good as Wordpad.

1. Easy to use.
2. Fits for everything.
3. Runs anywhere.

Notepad++ is great, had coded into it like 25 languages for colouring and bolding syntax, tabbed files, can split view to be working on 2 files at once.  Even saves current session so if you close and reopen it it maintains the file view exactly how it was.

oh and down with emacs

edit.com is superior.

Vim does all of that and more, you'll have to come up with something really impressive to top Vim.

Feature-wise, sure.

What about usability? Bottom of the pile there.

Actually, it's wordpad that fucks up the text. Adds all this text formatting shit, and screws you up bad. And, if you copy and paste, that also messes things up.

You can't edit binary XML with a text editor. You need a Hex editor to do that.

Any proper text editor has an integrated hex editor, anyway.

M-x hexl-mode

Name: Anonymous 2007-03-18 12:12 ID:cdML4Nh+

Xcode - General Coding / text editing,
Emacs - Hardcore editing, normally for config files / remote access,
SubEthaEdit - Collaborative editing over Bonjour,
Kate - Run as root, great editor anyways, Gedit is acceptable,
Property List Editor - XML / hex editing,
Dreamweaver - Web based stuff, CGI scripting / html / javascripting,
Dashcode - For anything dashboard related.
