So, /prog/, I'm trying to learn to program. I've taken a couple classes, so I know a little bit of C++ and Java. I liked C++, but not so much Java.
What do you all suggest as a good language to start with? Should I build on what I already know or is there something that would be better to begin with? I intend to do games, like all too many others, but I also want to make some normal applications, too, if that matters at all. Also, I can get access to tons of books, so that's not a problem, either.

C++ sucks, Java sucks more. Learn a dynamic language, perhaps Python (through the official tutorial) or Scheme (through SICP)?

I'm wasting my time on you because you're not going to do what I say anyway, but start by watching the SICP video lectures and then read the book.
Yeah, I tried to watch an episode on YouTube and got too bored to keep going. I've tried reading books on programming, and they're significantly less boring, so I'll still look into the book.

Basically describes my life following SICP and bashing other languages i suggest Visual Basic for its time better than professionals when it breaks Like in wider perspective using.
