Passing input to multiple programs

Honestly, I'm looking for a way to pass input to multiple instances of the same program, at the same time.  I can't edit these programs, so there's no way I can modify them, but if there's a way to code a program that will emulate keystrokes to multiple programs at the same time, I'd like to know ^^.

Honestly, this goes all my understanding of the convention of windows with focus and without focus, and only one window being able to have focus at a time, but I really don't have much expertise in this field, so I was wondering if anyone knew?

Just to clarify, this is in Windows XP.

Thanks for all the help everyone, SendKeys seems to be adequate for what I want it to do.  I don't know enough about the target program to be sending messages to it directly.
