While I could probably learn C++ by just reading websites, learning what code does, and trying to implement it from there, it seems like it'd be far easier if I could find a website that'd give a lesson, then say "k, make a program that does this", while "this" is relevant to the lesson. It doesn't have to be lengthy or really helpful in the exercises, just something to give me an idea of how it'd be useful and to help me find ways to practice.
I've done some googling, but maybe I'm just not looking the right way. Does /prog/ know of any sites that could help me? Also, although I'm in no position to be picky, it'd be nice if it had a decent section on graphics and/or GUIs. I can figure that shit out on my own, though, if I can at least get a decent grasp of the other stuff.

For GUI, read up on Win32 & winMFC at msdn. Its XBOX HUGE but will get you aquainted at reading API's (especialy terrible ones like M$'s)
www.mathbits.com click the C++ thats for beginner stuff, it's an actual AP full year course online. gives assignments and instructions from data types to files and structs and such!
the java one is for beginner if you'd like to start that, but the problem with both is that they use a libraries that you may need to download.

If you're serious about learning C++, spring the cash for Stroustrup's "The C++ Language." That's a book that will show you what you can do in the language.
Then grab a something like "Code Complete." That's a book that will explain what you should do in a program.
If you're new to programming, do not expect to jump right in to GUIs. Even the simple ones are complicated as hell when you don't even yet grok pointers.
And, in the name of all that is good and holy, don't ever even consider writing code in pre-.net visual basic. I occasionally get stuck maintaining crappy VB6 code from people who learned to program in it, and every time I curse their very existence.
I have no idea if they're available in electronic form from the seedier side of the internet, can't say I ever looked.
They're very available at amazon, though, and probably available via a number of your local book retailers as well.
On the other hand, if you're not willing to drop $50-$100 on books to learn about programming, then you may not really be serious about learning C++. And, if you're not serious about learning it, you probably won't work your way through Stroustrup anyhow. It's a very technical reference.
